HIV Testing and Support
Medications to treat and prevent HIV have greatly improved from the early days of the HIV epidemic. Many people with HIV lead healthy lives and remain undetectable (U=U) with only one daily medication. We still have a long way to go in eliminating HIV-related stigma, but there are many programs devoted to supporting people living with HIV.
What to expect when testing.
Getting tested can be an intimidating process. We try to make the process as comfortable as possible in a confidential, comfortable space.
Testing appointments generally take 20-30 minutes. This will vary based on questions you have, discussion, and the test results. During the test you will be in a private room so we can cover some questions necessary for quality care. We will need to give you a needle stick on a finger for a small blood sample. In some cases we can also take a mouth swab for a sample as long as you don’t eat or drink for the 20 minutes before the test. The test takes 10-20 minutes. Depending on the results and questions you have, we will help you find help for preventing HIV or treating it before your appointment ends. Remember, we are here to support you so ask us all the questions you have.
Please be aware we are required to report all positive results to the Utah Department of Health.
I’m too freaked out to get tested. What if it’s positive?
